The ingredients needed to make Fish curry/ Meen Kuzhambu:
  1. Get 500 gm fish(rohu)
  2. Prepare 2 tsp vadavam
  3. Make ready 3 spring curry leaves
  4. Get 2 tsp cumin/jeera powder
  5. Make ready 4 onion (chopped)
  6. Take 5 Tomato (chopped)
  7. Prepare 1 Small Lemon size tamarind
  8. Prepare 2 tsp coriander powder
  9. Get 4 tsp mixed curry masala
  10. Prepare 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  11. Get 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  12. Take To taste salt
  13. Take 5 tbsp gingely oil

When it comes to chicken I like perimmas recipes the best…Shhh hope amma doesnt hear it 😉. Authentic Meen Kuzhambu recipe without coconut in Chettinad style. It is very quick to make with freshly ground spices and goes well with rice, idli/Dosa. I would like to try different varieties of fish curry.

Instructions to make Fish curry/ Meen Kuzhambu:
  1. Soak tamarind in 1 cup water for ½ hour. Strain and extract from pulp.Clean and wash fish. Set aside.
  2. Heat oil in a wide skillet. Add vadavam after it cracks add curry leaves.
  3. Now add onions and jeera powder saute till golden brown.
  4. Add tomatoes and cook till mushy and raw smell disappears.
  5. Next add salt,turmeric and red chilli powder. Saute till oil separates from skillet.
  6. In a blender add mixed curry masala and coriander powder. Take half of the sauted mix and grind to smooth paste.
  7. To the remaining onion tomatoes in pan add strained tamarind water and ground paste.
  8. Wash the blender with water and pour into curry. Check salt and tanginess. Cover and allow to boil 15 minutes.
  9. Gently drop the fish into the curry and allow to cook covered for 5 minutes. No not stir the fish pieces may break.
  10. Serve hot with plain rice.

I have already posted a version of Meen Kuzhambu with coconut. Simple fish curry prepared with boneless tilapia fish and onion tomato based masala. I prefer tilapia fish that too boneless but you can always use any fish with or without bones. Tomatoes added in this recipe gives tangy taste to the curry that goes well with white rice. Chettinad Meen Kuzhumbu is a fish curry made with curry leaves, tamarind and coconut.
